CHECK YOUR REACTION

Life primarily consists of action and reaction. A person may not be responsible for an action, however, one is always responsible for his/her reaction. According to the Webster’s dictionary, Reaction is an action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.

So while you may not have control over a situation or an event, you certainly do have control over how you choose to respond. The former president of Dallas Theological Seminary, Dr. Charles Swindoll, said, “I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it”. Take a close look at how Elijah, David, and the twelve spies reacted in their respective situation.

In 1Kings chapter 18 and chapter 19, Elijah, had come out of a great victory over the false prophets of Israel. He had prayed fire from Heaven in the presence of King Ahab and the entire nation of Israel. The victory allowed him to kill all the 450 prophets of Baal. The massage reached Jazebel, the wife of King Ahab that Elijah had destroyed all the Baal prophets of Israel that work for her. Jazebel vowed to kill Elijah. Unfortunately, Elijah’s reaction was shocking, as he began  crying, running away and murmuring against God.

Jezebel could say whatever she wanted to say, however, Elijah’s reaction was the only thing that could determine his fate. The way Elijah reacted to the threats of Jazebel was completely inconsistent with someone that had just come out of a miraculous victory. As a child of God, you are more than a conqueror, but the way you react to Satan’s threats against your health, safety, family, resources, and interests have a lot to do with whether you could continue to remain a conqueror or not. Check your R-E-A-C-T-I-O-N when you are confronted with a fearful situation.

David, is another character. According to 1Kings Chapter 17, He comes to the battlefield and heard the taunting of Goliath. The entire army of the Israelites including King Saul were reacting in fear at the terrifying sight of Goliath. However, David had a different reaction at the situation. In fact, according to the account, David decided to march every threat issued by Goliath with his own threat against Goliath.

Unlike Elijah, David’s reaction to the situation (Goliath, the enemy) was that of faith, courage, and confidence in his God. One thing God honors is our expression of faith and confidence in Him. As a result of David’s faith-filled reaction that huge enemy was no march for him.             Moreover, in Numbers chapter 13, Moses had sent out twelve spies to the land of Canaan to prepare for an invasion. They returned after 40days to report about the expedition. Ten of the 12 spies were terrified by the giants (Sons of Anak) that they saw in the land, as well as the fortification of the city. They stirred up fear for almost the entire nation to cry, murmur, and complain against God and Moses. Their faithless reaction moved God against them. And God declared that none of them shall enter into the promise land.

On the other hand, two of the twelve spies (Joshua and Caleb) reacted by faith and said, “We are able to go up and take the country, though the giants may be there to resist but God will give us the victory”. God was pleased with their reaction of faith, and as a result these two were granted both victory over the enemy and an entrance into the promise land.
