WHO IS YOUR SOURCE OF HELP?

Psalm 121; Song of Decrees:

God did not create humans to be self-sufficient. If we were self-sufficient in and of ourselves we wouldn’t need Him. As such His purpose of creating man for fellowship would have been counter intuitive. Instead, He created us to depend on Him. We are complete in Him, and “Without Him we can do nothing.”

Again, the Fall of Man, which introduced sin and Satan into our lives brought us so low that our need of Him and for His Help became even greater. Moreover, we are neither living in a perfect world nor did the Lord promise us that we will be problem free. Instead, He said, “In this world you will have many troubles, but cheer up because I have overcome the world.”

As long as we have an enemy that goes around seeking whom he may devour, it is certain that we will need a source of help. Whether one is a believer in Christ or not, it makes no difference when it comes to our need for HELP.

In Psalm 121, the song writer declares, “I will lift up my eyes unto the hills. Where does my help come from. My help comes from the Lord…..”

“I will lift up my eyes unto the hills.” Is acknowledging the problem. The primary step to solving any problem is to admit that the problem exists and it’s real.  The attempt to deny or refuse to acknowledge a problem when one exists is neither a proof of faith nor spiritual maturity. In fact, one stands a better chance of making a sufficient preparation or seeking the appropriate help when the problem is acknowledged.

“Where does my help come from.” A clear indication of a desperate search for help. where do you turn to when you are faced with hills and mountains. It is not enough to acknowledge the problem if there is no where to turn for help. There are two wrong places that people often turn to as their source of help.

First, some make other people their source of help. Sadly, there’s only so much that people can do. Thus, “This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord.” (Jeremiah 17:5). If people, (However, wealthy or well situated in society) are your source of help then brace yourself for disappointment.

Secondly, some also turn to mediums as their source of help. Fortune Telling, Palm Reading, Soothsaying, Necromancer (Consulting the spirit of the dead), and other forms of Witchcraft. Consulting any of these mediums for help initiates one into the world of wicked spirits that will ultimately make the person’s life much worse.

King Saul was in desperate need for help to overcome an advancing Philistine invasion of Israel. Unfortunately, he turned to consult a medium. “Saul then said to his advisers, “Find a woman who is a medium, so I can go and ask her what to do.” The final destruction of King Saul came as a result of consulting a medium (1Samuel 28:3-28).

“My help comes from the Lord.” The Lord is my source of help! King David said, “God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my life” (Psalm 54:4). Imagine, your source of help is the creator of the universe. He is the God of all flesh – including, your physical body, so you can trust Him with your health. He neither slumbers nor sleeps – His watch over you is “24/7.” So you can trust Him with your protection. He is more than enough. Learn to call upon Him, depend on Him, and commit your ways to Him. With Him on your side, “Every mountain shall be made low, and every valley shall be exalted.” There is HELP in His name. Make Him your source of HELP. Call upon Him (Jeremiah 33:3).
