THE PLOW AND THE KINGDOM
The Lord Jesus said, “anyone that put his hand to the plow and looks back, is not fit for the Kingdom of God”. Certainly, this statement makes any logical person ask the question; What does plowing have to do with the Kingdom of God?
First, let us take a look at what a plow is, “a plow is a large farming instrument with one or more blades fixed in a frame, drawn by a tractor or by animals and used for cutting furrows in the soil and turning it over, especially to prepare for the planting of seeds”. It is clear from the description of plow that it requires energy, skill, and time. By the way, plowing is a field work.
When a person decides to plow he must be ready and willing to endure the heat of the sun, the rain and any other discomfort associated with a field work. In addition, one has to engage his energy, skills and time when it comes to plowing. Precisely, following Jesus is like engaging the plow. It is a field work that exposes one to various types of uncomfortable conditions. The follower of Jesus is exposed to a cold and vicious world that attacks him in many ways. Jesus said to His followers, “The world hates you because you are not of the world”.
Again, following Jesus demands conscious involvement of a person’s energy, skills, and time. Ecclesiastes 9:10, Whatsoever thy hand finds to do, do it with thy might. For this reason one can neither be an absentee follower of Christ nor follow Jesus from a distant. Remember, the attitude of “neither cold nor hot” have no place in following Christ. Boldly, Jesus said, “If you cannot take the plow, you are not fit for the Kingdom of God”.
Second, we need to ask ourselves what a plow is used for. “it is used for cutting furrows in the soil and turning it over, especially to prepare for the planting of seeds”. In short, the plow is an instrument of transformation. Following Christ will bring order into your life, turn your life (Heart and mind) over, so you can receive the seed of the Word of God and become fruitful and prosper in all you do. Therefore, if you are not willing to be transformed into the image of Christ, you are not fit for the Kingdom of God.
