YOUR SPIRITUAL IDENTITY

Knowing your identity as a spirit being is crucial to your ability to live, and walk  in the spirit. Spiritual world and spiritual life are as real as physical world and physical life. Largely, our physical world and life is controlled by spiritual forces. To deny the reality of spirit life is to deny the existence of God, “for God is a spirit and must be worshipped in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). Again, to deny the reality of spirit life is to misunderstand your own identity, because you were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). God is a spirit, so His image could not be in any other physical form or shape.

Therefore, you are primarily a spirit being with a physical body that affords you the right to live in the physical world. In fact, you are the only being that is capable to live in both worlds. Angels are permitted briefly to step into our physical world with human form of appearance only when they are on assignment. Otherwise, they are limited to the spirit world. Thus, it is neither a fantasy nor a far fetch thing to assert your self as a spiritual man or woman.

Who are you? You are a spirit, you have a soul and you live in a body (1Thessalonians 5:23). God lives in your spirit. The entrance of sin separated man from God, and man became spiritually dead, though physically alive. At this point man began to identify himself based upon his physical features, and how he thinks, and feels. Unless our dead spirit is made alive (Ephesians 2:1-6) we have no idea who we are.

Sadly, there are people who have been born again, yet they cannot break away from the identity that their physical features, feelings, and social construct have imposed upon them. The flesh, that is, one’s own immoral desires backed by the senses (Touch, taste, smell, hear and sight) are constantly clouding your spiritual identity. Forcing you to identify with the flesh, but the Scriptures says, So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his (Romans 8:8-9). You cannot boldly assert yourself as a spiritual person unless you know who you are and to whom you belong. In one of His heated arguments with the Pharisees, the Lord Jesus reiterated that he know who he is and to whom he belongs (John 8:42). Your identity directly and indirectly informs your life, shapes your goal  and influences your pursuit.

The ability to exercise spiritual authority and access certain resources is largely determined by knowing who you are. When you know that it is in Him you live, and move and have your being (Acts 17:28), then you know that His ability is at work in you. Thus, you can do all things through Christ who gives you the strength (Philipians 4:13). When you know that your life is hidden in Christ in God (Colossians 3:3), then you are confident that any weapon formed against you shall not prosper (Isaiah 54:17).

Spiritual identity starts with inviting Jesus into your life, and asking Him to forgive you of your sin and surrender to Him as your Lord and Savior. “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
