THE IMPORTANCE OF WAITING UPON GOD
Waiting upon God answers several needs including, gaining control over the flesh, clarity during crucial decision making, obtaining a special provision from God, and receiving God’s special protective covering. Waiting upon God is driven by a need.
Gaining control over the flesh is a constant need and a primary battle of the believer. The flesh includes arrogance, anger, fear, unforgiveness, unbelieve, hatred, selfishness, immoral acts, and impure thoughts to name a few (Galatians 5:19). Sadly, when the flesh is mentioned many people only think of fornication, adultery, or some immoral act. But the flesh is any behavior or activity that is contrary to the word of God.
It is in the nature of the flesh to control what one thinks, desires, feels, does and does not. However, ungodly, shameful, and destructive a behavior might be the flesh could care less because the flesh is self-serving, and it is against God. “So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:8). When the flesh is in control it makes our walk with God difficult, since it makes us to do the things that do not represent our new creation nature. In this way the flesh confuses us of our new identity and capability.
Thus, the believer is warned repeatedly to “Put off the flesh” or “kill” the flesh and its desires. In fact, The Apostle Paul revealed his challenges with the flesh when he said; “But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” 1Corinthians 9:27. Waiting upon God by setting aside time to fast, pray, read the Bible, meditate on His word, and fellowship suppresses the flesh and allows the spirit of God in you to gain control and produce that nature of God through you.
Waiting upon God is extremely important when it comes to making crucial decisions in life. Certainly, some of those decisions will shape our future and determine our destiny. As such the believer should make it a routine to take time to wait upon God and seek His face. Unfortunately, believers often neglect or ignore the necessity of waiting upon God during important decision-making period, as a result the damage has often been beyond repairs. As a matter of fact, no decision is too small to wait upon God about, because all those decisions form the sum of who you are and will become.
Waiting upon God cannot be overemphasized when it comes to desiring God to do something special in one’s life. Example, Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel. She denied herself of a festive dinner and lay before God in prayers. Her desire was met. Another example is Daniel, he waited upon God on his knees praying for the release of his people from captivity. He ate no solid food for 21 days and he was heard. God is still able and eager to provide if we will trust Him enough to wait upon Him and seek His face.
